7 Reasons To Plan a Spring Wedding in Alberta

Spring weddings are absolutely stunning. It’s one of the best seasons to host a soiree for your friends and family. Besides having just emerged from the dark of winter in this Province, here are 7 reasons to plan a spring wedding in Alberta.  Longer daylight hours to the lush landscapes that grace the foothills in June. We think spring weddings in Alberta are breathtakingly beautiful and here are a few reasons why.

1. Longer Days

One of the obvious reasons for a spring wedding in Southern Alberta is the light.  The most beautiful end of day, 10pm light.  We love photographing spring weddings primarily for the length of time we have daylight to work with.  This photo was taken just after the sun ducked behind the Canmore Three Sisters mountain range around 10 o’clock in the evening.

The bride and groom needed to cool down from a crazy dance floor. We pulled them out for a few bride and groom portraits at twilight.  This wedding was held on June 21st. It’s the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere.  In our opinion, a June wedding can be worth it just to make a few images like these at dusk.  Just gorgeous.

2. Lush Landscapes

June is the perfect month for lush, green landscapes.  Southern Alberta usually starts to brighten right up nearing the end of May and we continue to see beautiful green landscapes throughout the month of June.  If you are looking for bright and vibrant outdoor landscape photos, June might be the perfect month for you to host your Southern Alberta Wedding.

 3. Cooler Temperatures

Many Canadian couples plan their wedding in the height of summer with high hopes for a good forecast.  Although your chances for sunshine are greater in August or early September, temperatures can soar above 30 degrees.  If you are planning on being outside most of the day, it can get a little hot in that dress you’re wearing. Not to mention the poor groom and groomsmen in their suits.  Spring temperatures can be perfect for an outdoor ceremony or cocktail hour. You don’t have to sweat through the whole thing either.

4. The Flowers! My God, the flowers!

If you didn’t have enough reasons to already, here’s one word for you: PEONIES. Need another one?  RANUNCULUS. Seriously, spring weddings have the most gorgeous selection of florals . Many varieties you just can’t get in August or September in Canada. Have you seen the gorgeous Lilacs that bloom in Calgary in the spring? They smell heavenly and match the perfect spring palette. 5. Choice of Wedding Vendors and Venues

Typically, wedding vendors don’t book up as solidly in May or June. They tend to book up early July through October. You may find you have a wider selection of vendors when planning for a spring wedding. Especially if you were just engaged over the Christmas holidays.  Most Southern Alberta venues, wedding planners and photographers are generally fully booked for July through October at least year in advance.  Looking at May or June wedding dates may give you a little bit of flexibility and choice.

6. Summer Holidays haven’t started yet

This is a big one. Especially if you are planning a wedding in at a Rocky Mountain venue or plan on wedding photos at a popular Calgary location. Planning your wedding in May or June can be a bonus. Summer holidays haven’t started yet.  In the middle of July or August, there can be crowds of people and horrendous traffic.  A wedding in Canmore or Banff on a long weekend in July or August can be difficult to plan.  Many hotels are booked far in advance for summer tourists or the popular road races and marathons that take place in those areas.

7. The Honeymoon

I don’t know about you, but southern Alberta is pretty darn beautiful in the summer. There are fewer places we’d rather be than hiking in the mountains or enjoying a patio beer with friends. A spring wedding means the perfect time to jet set away for the perfect honeymoon.  If you are getting hitched in May or June, you’ll miss the February and March spring break crowds. That is, if you are planning a trip to Mexico, Cuba or the Dominican Republic. You’ll also miss the busy July and August rush for European and Mediterranean destinations. Furthermore, you’ll miss the harsh height-of-summer humid temperatures in that part of the world.
